Types of Dental Emergency

Posted by 4th and Morris Dentistry on Jun 20 2022, 01:18 AM

A dental emergency can be broadly defined as an event that causes discomfort or pain to the mouth, teeth, or gums. If you have a dental emergency, you should call your emergency dentist right away. Your emergency dentist may see you the same day.

There are a variety of different types of dental emergencies that can be experienced, including but not limited to:

Broken Tooth

A broken tooth can happen as a result of trauma or from biting down on something hard, such as a popcorn kernel. A broken tooth can be painful and cause you to lose confidence if it affects your smile. In such a case, see your dentist immediately.

Knocked-out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is an emergency. The best thing for you to do is to rinse the tooth, being careful not to touch the root of the tooth. Next, place it in a cup of milk or salt water. Call your dentist right away.

If you experience a knocked-out tooth, you should place a cold compress against the cheek. Do not try to force the tooth back into the socket. Instead, place the tooth in a glass of milk or salt water. Call your dentist right away.

Chipped Tooth

A chipped tooth can be painful and unsightly. When a tooth is chipped, the dental pulp is vulnerable to germs and infection. If bacteria penetrate the pulp, a toothache may follow. A chipped tooth also leaves the tooth vulnerable to cracks and fractures. If left untreated, a chipped tooth can lead to tooth loss.

Infected Tooth

One of the most common dental emergencies is an infection. An infection can occur from untreated tooth decay, a cracked or chipped tooth, or a broken or loose filling.

If you experience pain in your tooth, you may have an infection. Call your dental office immediately. Your dentist will examine the problem and prescribe treatment.

Swollen Jaw

A swollen jaw can be a sign of an infection, especially if it is accompanied by a fever and headache. This could indicate an abscessed tooth (tooth infection that has spread past the gum line).

Other causes of a swollen jaw include

  • Bruising
  • Traumatic injury

If you notice a swollen jaw, contact your dentist right away.

Severe Toothache

Severe toothaches require immediate medical attention. If you are experiencing a severe toothache, you need to see a dentist as soon as possible.

These toothaches might be the result of an infection in the tooth or gum, decay, or a fractured tooth. If you are experiencing a severe toothache, contact your dentist as soon as possible.

Tooth Abscess

An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms within the gums and in the bone surrounding a tooth due to an infection. Abscesses can also be caused by severe gum disease and tooth decay.

An abscess can be very painful and should be treated as soon as possible to reduce further complications. If you are experiencing dental pain or tooth sensitivity, call our dentist immediately.
